This article describes the WiFi infrastructure and range our devices need to be able to connect regular successfully to our server and the possible differences.

WiFi protocols

  • Open, WEP, WPA2 Personal, WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TLS, WPA2 Enterprise PEAP

WiFi standards

  • There are multiple actual WiFi standards such as WiFi 6E, 6, 5 etc. our ROOMZ devices support max. WiFi 5

Frequencies

Older displays (sold mid of 2020) support only 2.4 GHz, newer devices also support the 5 GHz band.

Differences

2.4 GHz

+ Long range estimated 45 meters

+ Low frequency is good at penetrating objects such as walls or windows

  • Slower speed

  • More vulnerable to interferences, because many other devices use the same frequency, such as microwaves or landline phones

5 GHz

+ Short range estimated 15 meters

+ Higher frequency is less vulnerable for interferences

+ Quicker speed

  • High frequency is bad at penetrating objects such as walls or windows

The range also depends on the IEEE 802.11 standards WiFi bands used, the numbers written here are average range expectations

WiFi range and quality affecting objects examples

  • Physical obstacles:

    • Walls, Doors, Windows, Furniture, Water/Aquarium, TV, etc.

  • Devices who can use the same 2.4 GHz frequency band:

    • Other networks, Bluetooth devices, Microwaves, Baby monitors, Walkie talkies, and so one
